R&D Project Manager

Gianluca Di Flumeri

Prof. Gianluca Di Flumeri earned his Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2014 and his Ph.D. cum laude in Morphogenesis and Tissue Engineering (BioPhysics curriculum) in 2018, both from Sapienza University of Rome. During his Ph.D., he spent a three-month research period at the Human Factors Department of the Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO) in Toulouse, France.

He is currently a Fixed-Term Researcher at the Department of Molecular Medicine at Sapienza University, where he teaches the courses "Measurement of Mental and Emotional States" and "Applied Electronic Bioengineering" within the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine. At the same time, he collaborates closely with BrainSigns, where he leads and coordinates scientific research activities, with a particular focus on Automotive, Road Safety, and Urban Mobility, for which he is the responsible.

His primary research activity focuses on the acquisition and analysis of human biosignals (brain activity, heart activity, skin conductance, eye movements) using biomedical devices, with the aim of investigating the neurophysiological correlates of human cognitive processes. The outcome is the development of synthetic neurometrics for key mental states such as workload, vigilance, stress, and fatigue. In particular, Prof. Di Flumeri's research finds application in socially relevant contexts, including Human Factors evaluation, Human-Machine Interaction studies, and the development of advanced Human-Machine Interfaces, mainly in the automotive and road safety sectors, but also in fields such as aviation, healthcare, management, and education. With his expertise and know-how, he also supports the Neuromarketing research team in evaluating users’ cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes in relation to communication and product experience.

His research has been co-funded by National and European Research Programs, in which he has also served as Project Manager (KREA-TECH – Erasmus+; SOULSS – ERASMUS+; WE-COLLAB – ERASMUS+; FITDRIVE - EU H2020; SIMUSAFE - EU H2020; MINIMA - EU H2020 SJU). Recently, he was awarded €1.3M in funding for a project named "SIMU2DRIVE," granted through the Fondo Italiano per la Scienza (FIS) Starting Grant program, financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.

The results of his research have been presented at various international conferences in Bioengineering and Neuroscience and published in dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and a patent (for more information see Google Scholar).

Additionally, Prof. Gianluca Di Flumeri has received multiple scientific awards, including the "Young Researchers 2014" award from the Italian Society of Sensory Sciences (SISS), the "I Guidoniani 2015" award from the Italian Association of Aerospace Medicine (AIMAS), the "Minerva Award" in 2017 from Sapienza Foundation in recognition of the innovation and scientific relevance of his research, and the "Young Scientist Award 2018" from SESAR Joint Undertaking.
